February USP 797 Tip of the Day: No makeup, jewelry or artificial nails in compounding area.

No makeup, jewelry or artificial nails in compounding area.

Makeup is a source of particles (millions of particles and chemical contaminates released per application) and artificial nails can harbor fungus, which can be introduced to patients. Also, fingernails longer than ¼” are sources of contamination according to the CDC. Work in the pharmacy is not a fashion show. It’s about the patient and their health — not how you look.

Daily tips in February are from a document Eric S. Kastango produced in 2006.
